Somewhere, sometime, someone once said, “With great power comes great responsibility.” As the lead actor on the hit series Arrow, Stephen Amell has earned great power. That power is to make hundreds of thousands of people happy simply by saying hello or taking a photo with them. Does he handle it responsibly? Absolutely.

This weekend, the Arrow himself departed Starling City for the Philadelphia Wizard World comic con. Fans flocked to the autograph booth and photo op area for a chance to meet Amell and thanks to our friends at Wizard World, we were able to make one fan who was unable to attend extra thrilled on Mother’s Day.

That fan is my mother, Michele. I know I can’t go so far as to say she is the world’s biggest fan, especially after some of the fans (and their dogs cosplaying as Arrow) I met yesterday, but I called her an hour prior and asked, “If you could have any one thing for Mother’s Day, what would it be?” After I ruled out myself popping up in Houston, she said, “Stephen Amell.” The best part is, she had no idea I was calling from Philadelphia, standing not so far from that wish.

Recently, Michele was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. Seven years ago, she beat the same disease through surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation. Unfortunately, she has to undergo similar treatment for the next few months but in the mean time, she occupies herself outside of work by watching Arrow, Flash, and any comic book television series or movie she can get her hands on. They cannot produce enough movies and series for this woman. The fandom certainly runs in the family.

Amell is an avid supporter of fighting against breast cancer. His own mother beat the disease not once, but twice, over the course of 25 years. When Wizard World and I shared Michele’s situation with Stephen, he agreed to participate in a FaceTime call with her during a scarce moment of free time he had at the convention. You can watch the epic moment in the video below – one that I know my mother and I won’t soon forget.

Special thanks to Stephen Amell, Wizard World, and Amell’s Heroes For Hire team.
